Pianosa Island

A low and white land made of shells, which merges with the sea so as to be invisible to sailors of the past.

How to get there? The shortest route is from Campo nell'Elba, the Elban municipality to which it belongs. We recommend that you book a few days in advance, at the reception you can get all the useful information to reach it: the boat leaves at 10.00 in the morning from the pier in the town of Marina di Campo and, in less than an hour of pleasant navigation, you will arrive in this low island that does not exceed 29 meters in height (Pianosa in fact owes its name to the fact that it is all flat).

Pianosa is a small complex territory. Immersed in a natural habitat of undisputed beauty and until recently inaccessible. You will be surprised upon arrival by a neo-Gothic architecture, the result of a rebuilding plan by Ponticelli, one of the first directors of the "agricultural penal colony". And then, after entering the off-limits territory of the prison, you will again be enchanted by the imposing reinforced concrete wall that cuts the island in two, legacy of the fight against the mafia. A monument of contemporary archeology that seems capable of creating the belief that the maximum security prison was truly impregnable.

A wild and fascinating island, absolutely to be discovered. Pianosa is the ideal location for sports activities. You can enjoy excursions on foot, by bicycle or even by horse-drawn carriage. Do not miss a swim in Cala Giovanna (the only place where it is allowed), a long beach of fine white sand next to the town and overlooked by Agrippa's villa. Do not forget your mask since the Pianosa seabed is among the liveliest and most luxuriant in the Archipelago, precisely because it has been protected from indiscriminate fishing for over 150 years due to the presence of the prison: with a little luck, you can also spot some dolphins playing on the horizon.

Certainly this island will not be greedy for emotions and reflections for its guests. You will fall in love with such a small, strategic territory, on the one hand urbanistically disrupted by the prison reality and on the other naturally protected by the beauty of its coves, coves and its jagged rocks.
